Several years ago, I was in a quandary – a fix – a jam. I was a square peg in a round hole. I really liked the company that I worked for, but the job that I was in just didn’t fit.
To make my workdays happier, I volunteered for employee clubs and interdepartmental projects. I read the business Weekly Reader-type brochures that offered workshops like “be a Better Customer Service Manager”, “The 3 P’s of Marketing”, etc. These brochures also had little one column articles. I’d save the articles that were interesting to me and thumbtack them to my cubicle wall. But one little portion of an article, I cut out and taped it to my computer monitor. I would read it every day.
The lady in the article said that her goal was to b e a teacher living in Hawaii in 5 years. Her friends said that 5 years was too far away. But, I thought – 5 years is 5 years. The 5 years will pass whether the lady stays where she is or if she’s in Hawaii. I’d rather be in Hawaii. I’d rather try that just stay in the same place.
So, I kept striving – up one day and down the next. In my “5 years”, I traveled to France, UK, Germany, and South Africa for my employer.
