What motivates me? What will make me run wholeheartedly towards the work, study, tasks that will take me directly to my goal?
It is surety – absolute assurance in my mind – confidence – that the work, study, tasks will take me (not lead me) to my goal.
“Take” evokes in me a sense of physical movement, actual definite movement to an actual definite place. It even makes my goal more concrete. No longer a fanciful ideal goal, but a real – you can have it – place or thing.
My first motivators as a child were:
- Challenge – “I can run faster than you!”
- Love – “You’re wonderful!”
- Fear – “If I don’t pass this grade, then I’ll have to stay in the house all summer!”
[Staying in the house used to be a punishment. All friends and fun were outside.]
My next motivators were:
- Food – “I need a job.”
- Shelter – “I need a job!”
- Clothing – “I need a J-O-B!”
Now, I have the job and physically I am content. I have the love, food, shelter, and clothing that I need. What are my motivators? I need new motivators – something beyond subsistence.
Thinking back over my life, what brought me joy and kept me on track for a goal? It was the thrill of learning something new or more in depth. The thrill of “I can do it”. Self-challenging, learning with a purposed, physical goal, and a timeline in mine.
